Travelling with a child: Tips to keep in mind

As a parent your child’s safety is your foremost responsibility.

While travelling with them for the first time, you might feel intimidated but there are certain things to keep in mind to make your trip more enjoyable.

Read on to know various tips to keep your child safe during your travels.

1- Age

The age of your child matters. If your child is  a new born then you should definitely wait before planning a trip.

Your baby needs to be vaccinated against various diseases that can affect them and cause serious health problems later.

If your child is not old enough then they can not travel by air because of some airline’s age restrictions so you might have to resort to travel by car or train.

Your child should be at-least 3 months old if you do plan to travel somewhere. This will ensure that their immunity system is strong enough to fight against various infections.

2- Plan your itinerary

When you have a baby you need to plan ahead before you are set to travel.

This means everything from your travel details, to your accommodations and your food is all pre-planned so you are prepared for the worst scenarios.

Your itinerary should be prepared keeping in mind you will have to take your baby everywhere with you and they will need plenty of time to sleep, eat or play around.

You can choose a child friendly hotel to stay in so that there other parents to help you out in certain situations and your child can make new friends.

3- First-aid kit

Always prepare a first-aid kit both for you and your baby that you can stash in your luggage while travelling. This may come in handy during emergencies.

This kit can include medicines for common cold or fever so that it won’t disrupt your trip with emergency hospital visits unless it’s absolutely necessary.

4- Identity card

If you are travelling to a busy place like a fair or a zoo, you can attach a name card with emergency details to their clothes or their stroller so that in case if something untoward happens they can be identified and police can be called immediately.

You can also dress them up in bright coloured clothes so they can be easily spotted in a crowd of kids.

5- Food and Water

When you are travelling with your baby, it’s a good idea to have adequate food and water with you so that you can provide for them when they are hungry or thirsty.

You can take formula food packets with you that are easy to use and a sterilised flask with boiled water inside it.

You can feed your baby according to your travel schedules for that day so that they can fall asleep easily during most of the travel time.

If your child is old enough to chew then you can pack certain treats for them like cereals or healthy snack bars to have when they get hungry.

6- Diaper bag

Your diaper bag is your own mini nursery and will come in handy while travelling.

You can put extra baby wipes and sanitisers that you can use while you change them during your travels.

Instead of using packaged water outside, ensure that you give them boiled water that you can keep in an insulated flask so that you don’t upset their stomach.

7- Stroller

Always take a light-weight, foldable stroller with you while you are travelling.

This will ensure that you don’t have to carry your baby most of the time which can exhaust you.

You can also opt for a baby sling or a baby carrier that is available readily in market.

You can put on a hat on them while travelling to avoid any sunburns.

8- Toys

The best tip to calm your baby down if they ever feel uncomfortable during your travels is to distract them with their favourite toy.

Seeing their favourite toy or doll will calm them down as they might feel anxious in unfamiliar surroundings and playing with their toy or doll will feel more familiar to them.

You can finish your days during your trip by playing with them, reading their favourite book with them or unwinding with a puzzle.
